Giovanni Schiaparelli
The italian was Giovanni Schiaparalli (1835-1910), director of the Brera observatory in Milan. His special interest was the solar system. In 1877, like many other astronomers, Schiaparalli turned his attention to Mars, because it was especially close to the earth that year. Schiaparelli observed straight dark lines on the planet's surface and drew maps showing this line. Most astronomers then and later, were unable to see the lines. Schiaparelli called the lines canali, The italian word for "channels". But the word was wrongly translated into english as "canals".
The straightnes of the lines and the use of the word "canals" caused many people to jump to the conclusion that Schiaparelli had seen structures made by intelligent beings.
Schiaparelli thought the lines were long ditches of some kinds, but he did not insist that they had to be the work of intelligent creaturess. However, many people, including some astronomers, were convinced that the channels were artificial. One such astronomer was the American was Percival Lowell (1855-1916). He drew maps of the planet, showing the chanals in great detail. He insisted that the canals were there and that they had to be the work of intelligent being.
